What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy has been utilized for centuries, with the first documented case dating back to 1027 AD in “The Book of Healing.” Over time, hypnotherapy has evolved and proven effective in aiding personal growth, healing various ailments and traumas, as well as reframing thought patterns and empowering individuals. Today, hypnotherapy is widely used in mental training for athletes, enhancing creativity in artists, writers, and musicians, and addressing issues such as motivation, phobias, healthy habits, sleep, and relaxation.
“Your possibilities for the future are only limited by your own thoughts.”
— Maia
A naturally occurring example of self-hypnosis is often described as being deep in thought while driving, only to arrive at your destination with no memory of the journey. Our brain waves naturally transition through stages: beta (alertness), alpha (relaxation), theta (deep hypnosis), and delta (sleep). Hypnosis pauses in the theta stage, granting easy access to the subconscious mind where core memories, feelings, and creativity reside.
“Trance is a natural everyday experience.”
— Milton Erickson
Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation that allows the subconscious mind to be open to healing, new ideas, and resolving deep issues. It can be thought of as the ego and self, shaped by social conditioning and expectations, stepping back to let your soul learn, communicate, and rewire new connections without external influences. During hypnotherapy, you remain conscious and in control, and your subconscious will only accept suggestions that align with your values.
While self-hypnosis is possible, many people find that a guided experience with a trained therapist provides a deeper and more exploratory experience.
From birth, we form neural pathways in our brains. By around age 11, unused pathways die off, and frequently used ones strengthen. This brain map changes slightly as we learn new things but remains mostly the same.
“We are creatures of habit. We think somewhere between 60,000 to 70,000 thoughts in one day, and 90 percent of those thoughts are exactly the same ones we had the day before.”
— Joe Dispenza
The connections we use most often become stronger, similar to how muscles strengthen with exercise. However, thought patterns from childhood that once served us well, may not be helpful in later years. Hypnotherapy helps to identify and rewire neural pathways to create new patterns, enabling you to achieve your goals into the future.
